MATERIAL CARE
General FAQ`s
How should I take care of my jewelry?
Always store your jewelry pieces individually, preferably in your Tilary soft-lined box or pouch, to prevent them from rubbing together, scratching, or tangling. Pay special attention to gemstones to ensure they do not knock against each other when stored. Additionally, remember to keep your chains fastened to avoid tangling.
Living in a humid environment? Store your jewelry with a small packet of desiccant crystals to help reduce tarnishing.
Keep your gold vermeil and silver jewelry in a dark, cool, and dry place. Over time, sterling silver will naturally oxidize and eventually tarnish. To prevent this, store silver jewelry in a sealed plastic bag or airtight box when not worn to keep out the air that causes oxidation. Wearing your jewelry frequently can also slow down the oxidation process. However, if your jewelry is stored for long periods, occasional cleaning is recommended to maintain its shine and prevent oxidation.
All our Tilary sterling silver jewelry is rhodium plated, which protects the silver from exposure and helps reduce long-term tarnishing.
Your jewelry is particularly susceptible to damage from chemicals present in perfume, hairspray, makeup, nail polish remover, body oils, suntan lotion, and deodorant.
Avoid keeping jewelry in direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause many gemstones to fade and lose their color. Gemstones such as amethyst, rose quartz, chalcedony, and smoky quartz can become paler from exposure to sunlight.
How should I clean my jewelry?
Clean your jewelry carefully with a soft, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth or chamois to maintain or restore its shine. If needed, use a mild washing-up liquid with warm water and a soft toothbrush, then rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Avoid using 'dip' polish or abrasive jewelry cleaners, as they contain harsh chemicals that can damage your jewelry over time. We do not recommend using any jewelry polishing cloths that have been treated with cleaners or polishing agents.
What can erode or dull my jewelry?
Do not swim or shower while wearing gold-plated or silver jewelry, and remove rings when washing your hands. Chlorine, salt water, and fresh water can damage precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Gold and silver are particularly vulnerable to chlorine, which can permanently damage or discolor them. Soapy water from bathing and showering can also leave a thin film, making the metal appear dull.
Some stones, like turquoise and lapis lazuli, are quite porous and should not be left immersed in water for too long. Liquids and oils can seep into these gems through tiny cracks between the crystals, causing permanent discoloration and damage. Porous gems should also be avoided in hot or extreme environments, such as the beach.
Tricks of the Trade for Metal Allergies
If you are allergic to gold-plated earrings, or get a rash or itchy reaction when wearing them, try putting a little bit of clear nail varnish on the post and scroll. When it eventually wears off just re-apply it.

METAL & GEMSTONES
14K Gold Plated
Tilary’s statement pieces are produced with a layer of 14K gold plated onto silver, ensuring a beautiful finish. Additionally, there’s a layer of anti-tarnish for extra protection.
Traditionally, Tilary has always used 14K Gold Vermeil, which has allowed us to develop pieces that are fashionable, durable, and affordable. However, when we started designing more playful statement collections, we realized producing them in 14K Gold Vermeil would be much more expensive. To maintain the affordability of our jewelry, we decided to use 14K gold plating for our statement pieces. They remain incredibly durable and can be worn for a long time with proper care.
Sterling Silver
All Tilary's sterling silver pieces are rhodium plated. This luxurious member of the platinum family provides an extremely tough and protective layer against tarnishing, ensuring durability. Tilary’s sterling silver pieces are stamped with the 925 mark, indicating the purity of the metal, and are also tested at the Assay office.
Cubic Zirconia or 'CZ'
At Tilary, we use Cubic Zirconia, providing a durable and affordable alternative to diamonds. You get the same dazzling look without the high price!
Freshwater Pearls
We use cultured freshwater pearls, handpicked for each design. Each pearl is unique, just like us – all different sizes, shapes, and colors.
Semi-Precious Stones
We use a range of semi-precious stones and beads in our jewelry, from our birthstone necklaces to beaded gems. When selecting our semi-precious stones, we focus on their color and depth, as well as the healing properties they carry. We always use genuine semi-precious stones, but sometimes we enhance them to accentuate their color. This means each stone is slightly different, but equally beautiful.
